Mini Infrared PIR Motion Sensor Module HC-SR505
The HC-SR505 (OEM) is a miniature passive infrared (PIR) motion sensor module designed for automatic human-presence detection. Based on infrared sensing technology, it operates over a wide voltage range (DC 4.5–20 V) while drawing fewer than 60 µA in standby — making it the go-to choice for battery-powered devices, energy-saving lighting, and embedded security systems. Its tiny 10×23 mm PCB fits where standard PIR modules simply cannot.
Key Features
- Ultra-compact PCB (10×23 mm): fits inside small enclosures and wearable projects → space-saving design
- Wide supply voltage (DC 4.5–20 V): works with everything from 3× AA batteries to 12 V adapters → maximum flexibility
- Ultra-low standby current (<60 µA): negligible power draw when idle → extends battery life dramatically
- 3.3 V logic output (HIGH / LOW): directly readable by 3.3 V microcontrollers without level shifting → clean digital signal
- Repeatable trigger mode (default): timer resets every time motion is detected → continuous coverage with no dead zones
- Default hold time 8 s (±30 %): output stays HIGH for ~8 seconds after last motion event → configurable for your application
- Detection angle <100° cone: focused field of view reduces false triggers → reliable sensing
- Detection range up to 3 m: adequate for room-level or corridor detection → practical indoor coverage
- Operating temperature −20 °C to +80 °C: suitable for outdoor enclosures → robust in harsh environments
Pinout & Wiring
| PIN | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | VCC | Power supply DC 4.5–20 V |
| 2 | OUT | Digital output — HIGH (3.3 V) when motion detected, LOW (0 V) otherwise |
| 3 | GND | Ground |
Wiring note: Connect VCC to your supply (5 V or higher works fine), GND to ground, and read OUT on any digital input pin of your microcontroller. No external pull-up resistor is required.
Compatibility
- Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega: supply from 5 V pin; OUT (3.3 V HIGH) is safely within the 2.0 V logic-HIGH threshold of AVR GPIO — works directly.
- ESP32 / ESP8266: supply from 5 V (Vin) or an external 5 V rail; OUT at 3.3 V is perfectly compatible with 3.3 V GPIO logic — no level shifter needed.
- Raspberry Pi: use a 5 V supply for the module; OUT signal at 3.3 V is safe to connect directly to RPi GPIO pins.
Typical Applications
- Automatic lighting control: turn LEDs or relays on when someone enters a room — the classic PIR use case, now in a package small enough for a light fixture.
- Battery-powered security alerts: with <60 µA standby current, the HC-SR505 can monitor a doorway for months on a pair of AA cells.
- IoT presence detection: feed the digital OUT pin to an ESP32 to send push notifications or MQTT messages when occupancy changes.
- Smart appliance auto-off: cut power to monitors, fans, or heaters after 8 s of no movement, saving energy automatically.
- Robotics & interactive installations: trigger robot reactions or art installations when a visitor approaches, thanks to the compact form factor.

FAQ
Q: The output is 3.3 V HIGH — can I connect it directly to a 5 V Arduino digital pin?
A: Yes. Arduino's digital input threshold for HIGH is ~2.0 V, so a 3.3 V signal is reliably read as HIGH. No level shifter is needed on the input side.
Q: Can I shorten the 8-second hold time?
A: The datasheet states the delay is customisable down to tenths of a second. Standard retail modules come pre-set to ~8 s; custom factory variants or hardware modifications are required to change it.
⚠ Note: Output logic level is 3.3 V. While this is safe for both 3.3 V and 5 V microcontroller inputs, do not connect OUT directly to a 5 V-only peripheral that expects a full 5 V HIGH signal without verification.
