KY-032 IR Infrared Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Module with 2–40 cm adjustable sensing range. Compatible with 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers. Ideal for smart cars, line tracking and proximity detection projects.

The KY-032 IR Infrared Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Module (MPN: KY-032) is a digital proximity sensor that uses infrared light to detect obstacles in front of it. When an object is detected, the digital output goes LOW (0); when no object is present, it stays HIGH (1). Its 3.3V–5V compatibility makes it a plug-and-play solution for Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi projects alike.

Key Features

  • Adjustable Sensing Distance: 2–40 cm range (calibrated against a white wall) → flexible placement in any build
  • Dual Voltage Support (3.3V & 5V): connects directly to both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller IO pins → no level shifter needed for most platforms
  • Digital Output: LOW when obstacle detected, HIGH when clear → simple to read with any digital pin
  • Good Anti-Interference Capability: modulated IR signal reduces false triggers from ambient light → reliable in real-world conditions
  • Colour/Reflectivity Awareness: darker or black surfaces reflect less IR, reducing effective range → important to consider when calibrating distance

Pinout & Wiring

PINSymbolDescription
1VCCPower supply: 3.3V or 5V
2GNDGround
3OUTDigital output — LOW = obstacle detected, HIGH = clear
4ENEnable pin — controls sensor activation

Connect VCC to your board's 3.3V or 5V pin, GND to ground, and OUT to any digital IO pin. The on-board potentiometer allows you to fine-tune the detection distance.

Compatibility

  • Arduino UNO / Nano (5V): connect VCC to 5V — fully compatible, read OUT on any digital pin
  • ESP32 / ESP8266 (3.3V): connect VCC to 3.3V — fully compatible, no level shifting required
  • Raspberry Pi (3.3V GPIO): connect VCC to 3.3V and read OUT directly on a GPIO pin

Typical Applications

  • Smart Car Obstacle Avoidance: mount on a robot chassis to detect and steer away from walls and objects
  • Line Tracking: detect contrast between black lines and white surfaces for line-following robots
  • Anti-Drop / Edge Detection: alert a robot when it approaches a table edge or drop-off
  • Object / Product Counting: count items passing in front of the sensor on a conveyor or production line
  • Liquid Level Detection: detect the presence of liquid through a transparent container wall

FAQ

Q: Why does the sensor detect objects at a shorter distance when they are dark or black?
A: Dark surfaces absorb infrared light instead of reflecting it back to the receiver. This reduces the signal strength, so the sensor can only detect them at closer range. For consistent results, calibrate the potentiometer for the specific surface colour used in your project.

Q: Can I use the KY-032 outdoors?
A: The module has anti-interference circuitry, but strong direct sunlight contains a high level of IR radiation that can overwhelm the receiver. Outdoor use in bright sunlight is not recommended without additional shielding.

Package Contents: 1 × KY-032 IR Obstacle Avoidance Sensor Module

⚠ Note: The 2–40 cm sensing range is specified for a white wall. Black or dark-coloured objects will be detected at significantly shorter distances. Always adjust the on-board potentiometer for your specific application surface.
