RC522 RFID Controller Breakout Board operating at 13.56MHz with SPI interface. Supports read/write to MIFARE tags and cards. Compatible with Arduino, AVR, ARM, PIC and other microcontrollers.

The RC522 RFID Controller Breakout Board (MPN: RC522) is built around the MFRC-522 chip — one of the most widely used NFC/RFID reader ICs in both hobbyist and commercial applications. Operating at 13.56 MHz, this module can read and write to MIFARE-compatible tags and cards, making it an ideal choice for access control, inventory tracking, payment systems, and any project that requires contactless identification. The SPI interface ensures fast and reliable communication with a wide range of microcontrollers.

Key Features

  • 13.56 MHz Frequency: Operates on the globally standardized RFID/NFC frequency → compatible with MIFARE cards, key fobs, and NFC-enabled devices
  • SPI Interface: Simple 4-wire serial communication → easy integration with Arduino, AVR, ARM, PIC and similar platforms
  • Read & Write Capability: Supports both reading from and writing to RFID tags/cards → enables flexible data storage on tags
  • NFC Communication: Can communicate with NFC-enabled smartphones → suitable for mobile payment or data exchange applications
  • Tag Emulation: The MFRC-522 can act as an NFC tag itself → opens up advanced peer-to-peer use cases
  • Breakout Board Format: All pins broken out with standard header spacing → breadboard and PCB friendly

Wiring note: Connect VCC to the 3.3V pin of your microcontroller. Do not apply 5V directly to the VCC pin. On Arduino UNO, use the 3.3V output pin. Wire SDA→Pin 10, SCK→Pin 13, MOSI→Pin 11, MISO→Pin 12, RST→Pin 9 as a common starting configuration.

Compatibility

  • Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega: Fully compatible via SPI — use the 3.3V pin for power; logic levels may require a level shifter on some boards
  • ESP32 / ESP8266: Native 3.3V operation makes these a perfect match — direct connection without level shifting
  • Raspberry Pi: Compatible via SPI interface at 3.3V logic
  • ARM / AVR / PIC microcontrollers: Any platform with SPI support can interface with this module

Typical Applications

  • Access Control Systems: Build door locks or secure entry systems that authenticate users via RFID card or key fob
  • Attendance Tracking: Automate student or employee check-in using unique card IDs
  • Inventory & Asset Management: Tag and track physical items in warehouses or labs
  • Contactless Payment Prototypes: Prototype NFC-based payment workflows with smartphones or MIFARE cards
  • DIY Smart Home Projects: Trigger automations, unlock scenes, or personalize settings based on who taps a card

FAQ

Q: Does the RC522 work with 5V Arduino boards?
A: The module runs on 3.3V. When using a 5V Arduino UNO, power the module from the Arduino's 3.3V pin. A logic level shifter on the SPI lines is recommended for best reliability, though many users connect directly without issues.

Q: What tags are included?
A: The kit typically includes one IC card and one round key chain tag, both MIFARE compatible and readable/writable by the RC522.

📦 Package Contents: 1× RC522 RFID Module, 1× MIFARE IC Card, 1× Round Key Chain Tag

⚠ Important: Supply voltage is 3.3V. Applying 5V directly to the VCC pin may damage the module permanently.
