The KY-024 Linear Magnetic Hall Sensor (MPN: KY-024) is a versatile magnetic field detection module designed for use with Arduino and compatible microcontroller platforms. It uses a Hall effect sensor to detect the presence, direction, and relative intensity of a magnetic field, making it ideal for position sensing, proximity detection, and contactless switching applications. The module outputs both a digital signal (threshold-based) and an analog signal (proportional to field strength), giving you maximum flexibility in your designs.
Key Features
- Dual Output: Provides both analog and digital outputs → use digital for simple detection or analog for field intensity measurement
- Linear Detection: The analog output varies linearly with magnetic field strength → enables precise field measurement, not just on/off detection
- Adjustable Sensitivity: On-board potentiometer allows threshold adjustment for the digital output → fine-tune detection sensitivity without changing code
- Low Energy Consumption: Designed for efficient power use → suitable for battery-powered or energy-conscious projects
- Compact & Robust: Red PCB module with metal construction → strong mechanical stability and easy integration
- Easy Installation: Standard 4-pin header interface → plug-and-play with Arduino sensor shields
Pinout & Wiring
| PIN | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | GND | Ground |
| 2 | VCC | Power supply (3.3V – 5V) |
| 3 | D0 | Digital output (HIGH/LOW based on threshold set by potentiometer) |
| 4 | A0 | Analog output (voltage proportional to magnetic field strength) |
Connect VCC to 5V and GND to GND on your Arduino. Connect D0 to a digital input pin for threshold-based detection, or A0 to an analog input pin (e.g., A0 on Arduino UNO) to read field intensity values.
Compatibility
- Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega: Fully compatible at 5V — connect directly to 5V and GND rails; use analog pin for A0 output and any digital pin for D0
- ESP32 / ESP8266: Compatible at 3.3V — use 3.3V supply; note that analog output will be scaled to 3.3V range
- Raspberry Pi: Use 3.3V supply; D0 digital output can connect directly to GPIO; for A0, an external ADC (e.g., MCP3008) is required as RPi has no built-in ADC
Typical Applications
- Proximity & Position Sensing: Detect when a magnet (attached to a moving part) passes near the sensor — perfect for encoder-style position feedback on motors or sliders
- Contactless Speed Measurement: Count rotations of a magnet-equipped wheel or shaft without mechanical contact, ideal for RPM counters and tachometers
- Door & Window Security Sensors: Detect the opening or closing of doors and windows using a small permanent magnet
- Magnetic Field Mapping: Use the analog output to map the relative strength of magnetic fields in DIY science experiments or lab setups
- Robotics & Automation: Detect end-of-travel positions on linear actuators or robotic arms using magnets as non-contact limit switches
