The TCRT5000 infrared reflective sensor module provides both analog and digital output for reliable proximity and line detection. Features an onboard LM393 comparator and adjustable sensitivity potentiometer. Compatible with Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi projects.

The TCRT5000 infrared reflective sensor module (MPN: TCRT5000) combines an IR emitting diode and a phototransistor in a single package, with an onboard LM393 comparator that delivers both a digital (D0) and an analog (A0) output. It is widely used in line-following robots, obstacle detection, and object proximity sensing applications where a reliable, low-cost reflective IR solution is needed.

When no surface is present within detection range — or the reflected IR signal is too weak — the phototransistor remains off and the digital output stays HIGH. When a reflective surface is detected and the reflected IR intensity is sufficient to saturate the phototransistor, the digital output switches LOW and the onboard indicator LED lights up.

Key Features

  • Dual Output (A0 + D0): Analog output for variable distance sensing; digital output for threshold-based detection → flexibility for any microcontroller application
  • Onboard LM393 Comparator: Clean, stable digital switching with hysteresis → reduces false triggers
  • Adjustable Sensitivity: Onboard potentiometer to fine-tune the detection threshold → adapt to different surface reflectivities
  • Onboard Indicator LED: Visual feedback when an object is detected → easy debugging during development
  • TCRT5000 Sensor: Compact reflective IR emitter/detector pair → proven, industry-standard component

Pinout & Wiring

PINSymbolDescription
1VCCPower supply (3.3V – 5V)
2GNDGround
3D0Digital output (HIGH = no object / LOW = object detected)
4A0Analog output (variable voltage proportional to reflected IR)

Wiring note: Connect VCC to the 5V pin of your Arduino (or 3.3V for ESP32/Raspberry Pi), GND to ground, D0 to a digital input pin, and A0 to an analog input pin. Adjust the onboard potentiometer to set the desired detection sensitivity.

Compatibility

  • Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega: Use 5V supply; read D0 on any digital pin and A0 on an analog pin (A0–A5).
  • ESP32 / ESP8266: Use 3.3V supply; read D0 on a GPIO and A0 on an ADC-capable pin.
  • Raspberry Pi: Use 3.3V supply; D0 can connect directly to a GPIO pin (A0 requires an external ADC such as MCP3008).

Typical Applications

  • Line-following robots: Detect black lines on white surfaces for autonomous navigation projects.
  • Object / obstacle proximity detection: Trigger an action when an object enters the detection range.
  • Encoder counting: Sense reflective strips on a rotating wheel for RPM or position measurement.
  • Liquid level indication: Detect float position in transparent or opaque containers.
  • Tape detection on conveyor systems: Identify markings or gaps on moving surfaces in DIY automation projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the A0 and D0 outputs?
A: D0 is a digital on/off signal determined by the onboard LM393 comparator and the potentiometer threshold setting. A0 provides a continuous analog voltage that varies with the intensity of the reflected IR signal, allowing distance or reflectivity to be measured more precisely.

Q: Can I use this module with a 3.3V microcontroller like the ESP32?
A: Yes. The module accepts 3.3V on the VCC pin, making it directly compatible with ESP32, ESP8266, and Raspberry Pi without level shifting.

⚠ Note: Detection range and sensitivity depend on the reflectivity and colour of the target surface. Dark or matte surfaces absorb more IR and may require sensitivity adjustment via the onboard potentiometer.
