Soil Hygrometer / Moisture Detection Module
The Soil Hygrometer / Moisture Detection Module is a compact, easy-to-use sensor designed to measure the moisture content of soil. It works by comparing the detected soil humidity against a user-adjustable threshold: when the soil is too dry (humidity below the set threshold), the D0 pin outputs HIGH; when the soil is sufficiently moist (humidity above the threshold), D0 outputs LOW. This simple logic makes it straightforward to trigger pumps, relays, or microcontroller actions without any complex coding.
Key Features
- Digital Output (D0): Outputs a clean HIGH/LOW signal based on a threshold → directly readable by any digital input pin, no ADC needed
- Adjustable Sensitivity: On-board potentiometer allows you to fine-tune the moisture threshold → adapts to different soil types and plant needs
- Simple 3-Wire Interface: VCC, GND, and D0 are all you need → minimal wiring, beginner-friendly
- On-Board Indicator LED: Visual feedback when the output is triggered → easy debugging without a multimeter
- Probe + Module Design: Separate sensing probes connect to the control board → place probes in soil while keeping electronics safe
Pinout & Wiring
| PIN | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | VCC | Power supply (3.3V or 5V) |
| 2 | GND | Ground |
| 3 | D0 | Digital output — HIGH when soil is dry, LOW when moist |
Wiring note: Connect VCC and GND to your board's power pins. Connect D0 to any digital input pin on your microcontroller. Adjust the on-board potentiometer to set the desired moisture threshold for your application.
Compatibility
- Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega: Fully compatible at 5V — connect D0 directly to any digital pin
- ESP32 / ESP8266: Compatible at 3.3V — D0 output is safe for 3.3V logic inputs
- Raspberry Pi: Compatible via GPIO digital input at 3.3V logic
Typical Applications
- Automatic plant watering systems — trigger a water pump or valve when soil dries out, keeping houseplants and garden beds healthy without manual intervention
- Smart greenhouse monitoring — integrate with Arduino or ESP32 to log soil moisture data and send alerts remotely
- School & university electronics projects — a classic, well-understood sensor module perfect for learning digital I/O and threshold-based control
- Agricultural IoT prototypes — use multiple modules across different soil zones to map moisture distribution in a field or garden
- Science fair experiments — demonstrate plant biology and electronics in a single, engaging project

FAQ
Q: Does this module provide an analog output as well?
A: The module described here provides a digital D0 output only. The D0 pin goes HIGH when soil is dry and LOW when moist, based on the threshold set by the on-board potentiometer.
Q: How deep should I insert the probes into the soil?
A: Insert the metal probes fully into the soil up to (but not beyond) the board connector area. Adjust the potentiometer while the probes are in place to calibrate the threshold for your specific soil and pot size.
⚠ Note: Prolonged exposure of the metal probes to moist soil can cause oxidation over time. For long-term installations, consider using the module intermittently (power it only during measurements) to extend probe lifespan.
