HC-05 Bluetooth RF Transceiver Module – enables wireless serial (UART) communication between Arduino or other microcontrollers and Bluetooth-enabled devices. Supports Master and Slave modes via Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR protocol.

The HC-05 Bluetooth RF Transceiver Module (MPN: HC-05) is a classic, widely-used wireless serial communication module that bridges your microcontroller project to any Bluetooth-enabled device — smartphone, tablet, or PC. Operating over the Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR protocol, it creates a transparent UART link so your Arduino or development board can send and receive data wirelessly without changing your serial code.

Key Features

  • Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR Protocol: Proven, stable wireless standard → reliable data transfer with broad device compatibility
  • Master & Slave Mode: Configurable via AT commands → connect to other Bluetooth devices or accept incoming connections
  • Transparent UART Bridge: Works like a wireless serial cable → no special library needed, drop-in replacement for wired serial
  • AT Command Configuration: Baud rate, name, PIN and mode all configurable → full control over module behaviour
  • Integrated Antenna: On-board PCB antenna → compact design, no external antenna required

Pinout & Wiring

PIN Symbol Description
1 VCC Power supply (3.6 V – 6 V)
2 GND Ground
3 TXD Serial data output (connect to MCU RX)
4 RXD Serial data input (connect to MCU TX)
5 STATE Connection status indicator
6 EN / KEY Enable / AT command mode (high = AT mode)

⚠ Wiring note: The HC-05 RXD pin operates at 3.3 V logic. When connecting to a 5 V Arduino, use a voltage divider (e.g. 1 kΩ + 2 kΩ) on the TX→RXD line to avoid damaging the module. The TXD output is 3.3 V and is read reliably by 5 V Arduino inputs without level shifting.

Compatibility

  • Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega (5 V): Compatible — use a voltage divider on the Arduino TX → HC-05 RXD line.
  • ESP32 / ESP8266 (3.3 V): Fully compatible at logic level; power from 3.3 V–5 V supply.
  • Raspberry Pi (3.3 V): Compatible via UART GPIO pins at 3.3 V logic.

Typical Applications

  • Wireless control of Arduino robots or RC vehicles from a smartphone app
  • Sending sensor data (temperature, humidity, GPS) to a PC or mobile device without USB cable
  • Building wireless data loggers that stream readings to a Bluetooth terminal
  • DIY home automation panels controlled over Bluetooth
  • Two-microcontroller communication (Master–Slave pairing between two HC-05 modules)

FAQ

Q: What is the difference between HC-05 and HC-06?
A: The HC-05 supports both Master and Slave modes and is configurable via AT commands, making it more flexible. The HC-06 is fixed in Slave mode only.

Q: Do I need a special app to connect to the HC-05?
A: No. Any Bluetooth serial terminal app (e.g. Serial Bluetooth Terminal on Android) can connect to the HC-05 once paired. Default PIN is usually 1234 or 0000.

Package Contents: 1 × HC-05 Bluetooth RF Transceiver Module

⚠ Note: Protect the RXD pin from 5 V logic signals — always use a level shifter or voltage divider when interfacing with 5 V microcontrollers to prevent permanent damage to the module.
