PIR Motion Sensor Module HC-SR501
The HC-SR501 PIR Motion Sensor Module (OEM) is a passive infrared detector designed to sense movement from humans or animals within a range of up to 7 metres and a 120° detection cone. It outputs a clean digital 3.3 V HIGH/LOW signal, making it immediately readable by any microcontroller. With an input supply range of 5–12 V DC and a standby current of just 60 mA, the HC-SR501 is one of the most popular motion-sensing modules for Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi projects.
Κey Features
- Adjustable Sensitivity: on-board trimmer lets you tune the detection threshold → avoids false triggers
- Adjustable Trigger Delay: second trimmer sets the output hold time (approx. 2–4 s) → controls how long the output stays HIGH after motion stops
- Wide Supply Range (5–12 V DC): built-in voltage regulator handles various power rails → flexible for wall adapters, USB, or battery packs
- 3.3 V Digital Output: direct compatibility with 3.3 V logic microcontrollers → no level-shifter needed for ESP32 or Raspberry Pi GPIO
- Long Detection Range (7 m / 120°): covers an entire room from a corner mount → ideal for whole-room presence detection
Pinout & Wiring
| PIN | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | VCC | Power supply input: 5–12 V DC |
| 2 | OUT | Digital output: 3.3 V HIGH when motion detected, LOW otherwise |
| 3 | GND | Ground |
Wiring note: Connect VCC to your 5 V (or higher) rail, GND to common ground, and OUT to any digital input pin on your microcontroller. Because OUT is 3.3 V logic, it can be read directly by Arduino (treats ≥2 V as HIGH) or ESP32/Raspberry Pi without a level shifter.
Compatibility
- Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega: Power from the 5 V pin; read OUT on any digital pin — fully compatible.
- ESP32 / ESP8266: Power from 5 V (VIN); OUT at 3.3 V connects directly to GPIO — fully compatible.
- Raspberry Pi: Power from 5 V header pin; OUT at 3.3 V connects safely to GPIO — fully compatible.
Typical Applications
- Intruder alarm systems: trigger a buzzer or notification when unexpected motion is detected in a room
- Automatic lighting control: turn lights on only when someone is present, saving energy
- Smart home presence detection: feed occupancy data to Home Assistant, Node-RED, or similar platforms
- Security camera activation: wake a camera or start recording only on detected movement
- Low-power IoT nodes: use motion to wake a sleeping ESP32 and send an MQTT alert

FAQ
Q: Can I use the HC-SR501 with a 3.3 V-only system?
A: The module requires at least 5 V on its VCC pin due to the internal regulator. However, the OUT signal is already 3.3 V, so 3.3 V microcontrollers (ESP32, Raspberry Pi) can read it directly. You need a 5 V power rail to drive the module itself.
Q: What do the two trimmers on the board do?
A: One adjusts detection sensitivity (distance), the other sets the output hold time — how long the OUT pin stays HIGH after motion is last detected (approximately 2–4 seconds in the default range).
⚠ Note: Ensure the module is powered from a 5–12 V supply. Do not connect VCC directly to a 3.3 V rail without bypassing the internal regulator, as this may result in unreliable operation.
