Liquefied Gas Methane Gas Sensor Module MQ-5
The MQ-5 Liquefied Gas & Methane Gas Sensor Module (MPN: MQ-5) is a 5V DC combustible gas detector designed to measure concentrations of LPG, LNG, Natural Gas, Methane and Iso-butane in the air across a range of 200 to 10,000 ppm. It provides both analog and digital output signals, making it straightforward to integrate into gas leak detection and alarm circuits. An onboard potentiometer allows you to fine-tune the sensitivity threshold to suit your specific environment.
Key Features
- Wide Gas Detection Range (200–10,000 ppm): Covers LPG, LNG, Natural Gas, Methane and Iso-butane → versatile for home, lab and industrial gas monitoring
- Analog + Digital Output: Both output types on the same module → works with both analog ADC pins and digital interrupt pins
- 5V DC Rated Voltage: Standard supply voltage → plug-and-play compatibility with Arduino UNO, Nano and similar 5V boards
- Adjustable Sensitivity: Onboard potentiometer → set your own alarm threshold without changing code
- Fast Response: Quick reaction to gas concentration changes → suitable for real-time safety alert systems
- Compact Form Factor (32 × 20 mm): Small PCB size → easy to embed in enclosures or breadboard projects
Pinout & Wiring
| PIN | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | VCC | Power supply — connect to 5V |
| 2 | GND | Ground |
| 3 | AOUT | Analog output — connect to Arduino analog pin (A0–A5) |
| 4 | DOUT | Digital output — connect to any Arduino digital pin; HIGH when gas exceeds threshold |
Wiring note: Power the module with 5V and GND. Read AOUT for proportional gas concentration values; use DOUT for simple threshold-triggered alarms. Adjust the potentiometer to set the digital trigger point.
Compatibility
- Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega: Direct connection — 5V power rail, AOUT to analog pin, DOUT to digital pin. No level shifter required.
- ESP32 / Raspberry Pi (3.3V logic): Use DOUT only or add a voltage divider on AOUT, since the analog signal output can reach 5V.
Typical Applications
- Home gas leak alarm: Detect LPG or natural gas leaks in kitchens and utility rooms and trigger a buzzer or relay.
- Arduino gas monitor project: Display real-time ppm readings on an LCD or send alerts via Serial Monitor during prototyping.
- Industrial safety system: Monitor methane or coal gas levels in enclosed spaces and activate ventilation automatically.
- Smart home / IoT integration: Pair with an ESP8266/ESP32 (via DOUT) to push gas-level notifications to your phone.
- Educational robotics kit: Teach students about analog sensors, ADC conversion and threshold-based decision logic.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can the MQ-5 detect carbon monoxide (CO)?
A: The MQ-5 is optimised for LPG, methane and coal gas. While the original Long EL description mentioned CO, the verified detection targets are LPG, LNG, Natural Gas, Methane and Iso-butane. For CO detection, consider the MQ-7 sensor instead.
Q: Does the MQ-5 need a warm-up time before accurate readings?
A: Like all MQ-series sensors, the MQ-5 requires a preheat period (typically a few minutes after first power-on) for the sensing element to stabilise. Plan for this in time-critical applications.
⚠ Safety Notice: This module is intended for prototyping and educational use. Do not rely solely on this sensor for life-safety critical gas detection. Always follow local safety regulations for gas installations.
