KY-005 Infrared (IR) Transmitter Module — 940 nm IR LED, 3.3 V–5 V operation, digital control via PWM. Compatible with Arduino, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi for remote control and IR communication projects.

The KY-005 Infrared Emission Sensor Module (MPN: KY-005/Keyes) is a compact IR transmitter that emits an invisible 940 nm infrared light beam when driven by a digital output pin. It is part of the popular Keyes 37-in-1 Arduino sensor kit and is the ideal companion to the KY-022 IR receiver module. Because the circuit consists of a 940 nm IR LED plus a current-limiting resistor — with no extra driver transistor — the module stays minimal, affordable, and easy to integrate into any 3.3 V or 5 V microcontroller project.

Key Features

  • 940 nm IR wavelength: matches the peak sensitivity of most IR receiver ICs (e.g. TSOP series) → reliable, long-range transmission
  • 3.3 V – 5 V supply range: a single module works with both 5 V Arduino boards and 3.3 V ESP32/Raspberry Pi without level shifters → maximum flexibility
  • Digital PWM control: the 38 kHz carrier is generated in software (IRremote library) via a standard digital output pin → no extra hardware modulator needed
  • IRremote library support: NEC, Sony, RC5, Samsung and many more protocols are supported out of the box → rapid prototyping
  • 3-pin 2.54 mm header: breadboard- and jumper-wire-friendly → plug-and-play wiring
  • 20 mA forward current, 90 mW dissipation: low power consumption keeps the module cool during continuous use

Pinout & Wiring

PinSymbolDescription
1SSignal — connect to a digital (PWM-capable) output pin of your microcontroller
2VCC (middle, unmarked)Power supply — 3.3 V or 5 V DC
3Ground (GND)

Wiring note: Use a 220 Ω series resistor when powering from 5 V, or a 120 Ω resistor when powering from 3.3 V, if you are driving the LED directly without the onboard resistor path. Connect pin S to any PWM-capable digital pin and use the IRremote library to send IR codes.

Compatibility

  • Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega (5 V): fully compatible — connect VCC to 5 V, GND to GND, S to any digital pin (e.g. D3 for IRremote default)
  • ESP32 / ESP8266 (3.3 V): fully compatible — connect VCC to 3.3 V; the signal logic levels are within the safe range of the LED driver
  • Raspberry Pi (3.3 V GPIO): compatible for simple on/off IR burst; use a transistor driver for sustained high-current pulses
  • KY-022 IR Receiver Module: natural pairing — KY-005 transmits, KY-022 receives

Typical Applications

  • DIY remote controls: replicate or clone TV/AC remote signals to control home appliances from a microcontroller
  • Home automation: integrate IR control into an ESP32/Arduino smart-home hub to trigger IR-controlled devices via Wi-Fi or MQTT
  • Robotics: use IR pulses for short-range robot-to-robot or robot-to-base-station communication
  • Educational projects: ideal first IR project — learn PWM modulation, IR protocols (NEC, Sony) and the IRremote library
  • Security & detection systems: pair with a KY-022 receiver as an IR beam-break obstacle detector or proximity trigger

FAQ

Q: Do I need the IRremote library to use the KY-005?
A: Not strictly — you can toggle the signal pin manually — but the IRremote library handles the 38 kHz PWM carrier and protocol encoding automatically, saving significant development time. It supports NEC, Sony, RC5, Samsung and more.

Q: What is the difference between KY-005 and KY-022?
A: The KY-005 is an IR transmitter (emits IR light), while the KY-022 is an IR receiver (detects IR light). They are designed to work together as a complete IR communication pair.

Package contents: 1 × KY-005 Infrared Emission Module

Note: The KY-005 emits infrared light that is invisible to the naked eye. Use a smartphone camera to verify that the LED is active during testing.
