Electret Microphone Amplifier Breakout Board Module MAX4466
The MAX4466 Electret Microphone Amplifier Breakout Board gives your microcontroller project a reliable audio input channel. Built around the MAX4466 amplifier IC, this fully assembled and tested module ships with a wideband electret microphone already soldered on, so you can start capturing sound with just three wire connections. Its wide supply voltage range (2.4 V – 5 V DC) makes it a natural fit for both 5 V Arduino boards and 3.3 V platforms such as ESP32 and Raspberry Pi.
Key Features
- Onboard Electret Microphone (20 Hz – 20 kHz): Full audible-spectrum coverage → suitable for voice, music, and environmental sound capture.
- Adjustable Gain Trimmer: Small potentiometer on the back of the board → fine-tune sensitivity without extra components.
- Wide Supply Voltage (2.4 V – 5 V DC): Single supply range → compatible with 3.3 V and 5 V microcontroller platforms.
- Fully Assembled & Tested: Ready to use out of the box → no soldering of the mic or IC required.
- Analog Output: Direct connection to any ADC pin → easy integration with Arduino analogRead() or ESP32 ADC.
Pinout & Wiring
| PIN | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | GND | Connect to system ground |
| 2 | VCC | Supply voltage 2.4 V – 5 V DC |
| 3 | OUT | Analog audio output → connect to ADC input |
Wiring note: Connect GND → GND, VCC → 3.3 V or 5 V, OUT → any analog input pin. The output is an analog signal and is not designed to drive speakers or headphones directly — an external audio amplifier is required for speaker output.
Compatibility
- Arduino UNO / Nano (5 V): Connect VCC to 5 V and OUT to any A0–A5 analog pin.
- ESP32 / ESP8266 (3.3 V): Connect VCC to 3.3 V and OUT to any ADC-capable GPIO.
- Raspberry Pi (3.3 V): Connect VCC to 3.3 V; use an external ADC (e.g. MCP3008) since Raspberry Pi has no native analog input.
Typical Applications
- Voice changers & audio effects: Capture voice input and process it digitally in real time.
- Audio recording & sampling: Record audio snippets to SD card or memory buffer via microcontroller ADC.
- FFT & audio-reactive projects: Feed the analog output into an FFT library to drive LED visualisers or sound-level meters.
- Clap / sound detection: Detect threshold events for automation triggers and smart home projects.
- Noise & environment monitoring: Log ambient sound levels over time for IoT sensor nodes.

FAQ
Q: Can I connect the OUT pin directly to a speaker?
A: No. The OUT pin carries an analog audio signal intended for an ADC input, not a speaker load. You will need a dedicated audio amplifier module between this board and any speaker or headphone.
Q: How do I increase or decrease the microphone sensitivity?
A: Use a small screwdriver to adjust the trimmer potentiometer on the back of the board. Turning it increases or decreases the amplifier gain, allowing you to tune sensitivity for your environment.
⚠ Note: The analog output is not suitable for driving speakers or headphones. An external audio amplifier is required for audio playback.
