Immediate Dispatch
KY-022 Infrared IR Receiver Module — 37.9 KHz carrier frequency, 18 m receiving range, 2.7–5.5 V wide supply voltage. Compatible with Arduino, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi projects. Plug-and-play 3-pin interface based on the 1838 IR receiver IC.
The KY-022 Infrared IR Receiver Module (MPN: KY-022) is a compact, ready-to-use sensor module designed to receive standard IR remote-control signals. Built around the widely adopted 1838 infrared receiver IC, it demodulates 37.9 KHz carrier signals and outputs a clean digital pulse directly to any microcontroller — making it the go-to choice for adding remote-control functionality to Arduino, ESP32, or Raspberry Pi projects without any external components.
Key Features
- Long Receiving Range – 18 m: Detects IR signals from up to 18 metres away → ideal for room-scale remote-control applications.
- 37.9 KHz Carrier Frequency: Matches the most common IR remote standard (NEC, RC5, Sony SIRC) → works out-of-the-box with the majority of TV and appliance remotes.
- Wide Supply Voltage 2.7 – 5.5 V: Operates safely at both 5 V (Arduino) and 3.3 V (ESP32, Raspberry Pi) logic levels → no level-shifter required.
- Wide Receiving Angle – 90°: ±45° cone of acceptance → the remote does not need to be precisely aimed at the sensor.
- High Ambient Light Immunity: Functions under up to 500 lux illumination with built-in electromagnetic-interference shielding → reliable performance under normal indoor lighting.
- Compact Form Factor – 6.4 × 7.4 × 5.1 mm: Tiny footprint → fits easily into enclosures, custom panels, or breadboard prototypes.
Pinout & Wiring
| PIN | Symbol | Description |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | S (OUT) | Digital signal output — connect to a digital input pin on your microcontroller |
| 2 | GND | Ground — connect to GND |
| 3 | VCC | Power supply — 2.7 V to 5.5 V |
Wiring note: Connect VCC to the 5 V (or 3.3 V) rail, GND to ground, and the S pin to any digital input of your board. With Arduino, use the popular IRremote library and call IrReceiver.begin(PIN, ENABLE_LED_FEEDBACK) to start decoding signals immediately.
Compatibility
- Arduino UNO / Nano / Mega (5 V): Direct connection — VCC to 5 V, S to any digital pin. Full compatibility with the IRremote and IRLib2 libraries.
- ESP32 / ESP8266 (3.3 V): Connect VCC to 3.3 V; the 2.7 V minimum rating guarantees stable operation. Use the ESP32 IRremote port.
- Raspberry Pi (3.3 V GPIO): Connect VCC to the 3.3 V header pin and S to any GPIO; use the LIRC or pigpio library for decoding.
Typical Applications
- DIY universal remote receiver: Decode signals from any household remote to control smart-home relays, LED strips, or media centres built on Arduino or ESP32.
- Home automation: Repurpose an old TV remote to trigger scenes, adjust brightness, or control motorised blinds — no extra hardware needed.
- Robotics & RC toys: Add wireless directional control to a robot car or drone using a standard remote handset.
- Consumer electronics replacement: Restore IR reception to TVs, set-top boxes, air conditioners, and disc players whose original receiver has failed.
- Learning & education: Perfect starter module for students learning about digital communication protocols (NEC, RC5) and interrupt-driven programming on Arduino.

FAQ
Q: Which IR protocols does the KY-022 support?
A: The 1838 receiver IC demodulates any signal transmitted at 37.9 KHz — this covers the most popular protocols (NEC, RC5, RC6, Sony SIRC). Protocol decoding is handled entirely in software by your library of choice.
Q: Can I use the KY-022 directly with a 3.3 V ESP32 without a level shifter?
A: Yes. The minimum operating voltage is 2.7 V, so powering it from the 3.3 V rail is well within spec and the digital output will be read correctly by 3.3 V GPIO pins.
Package Contents: 1 × KY-022 Infrared IR Receiver Module
