The SIM800L (MPN: SIM800L) is one of the smallest GSM/GPRS modules available, enabling any microcontroller project to send SMS messages, make voice calls, and exchange data over a GPRS connection using a standard Micro SIM card. GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is the worldwide standard for mobile communication, and the SIM800L gives your maker or IoT project direct access to that network in a footprint barely larger than a postage stamp.

  • ESP32 / ESP8266 (3.3 V logic): UART lines are compatible at 3.3 V logic; supply the module separately from a LiPo cell or a dedicated 4 V regulator, as the ESP's 3.3 V rail cannot source the peak current the SIM800L demands during transmission
  • Raspberry Pi & other 3.3 V SBCs: UART-compatible; again, power the module from an independent supply

Q: Can I power the SIM800L directly from the Arduino's 5 V pin?
A: No. The SIM800L requires 3.7–4.2 V and draws high peak currents during GSM transmission. Power it from a dedicated Li-Po cell or a stable 4 V regulator; using the Arduino's 5 V rail risks damaging the module and causing unstable operation.

Q: Does it work in Cyprus and Greece?
A: Yes. The quad-band support covers the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands used by all major Cypriot and Greek mobile operators.
