The AF201 is a vintage PNP Germanium BJT in a TO-72 package with a shielded 4th lead. Originally designed for VHF/UHF RF amplification in radio and television tuners, the AF201 delivers low-noise performance in high-frequency applications.

AF201 Vintage Germanium PNP Transistor – Low-Noise VHF/UHF RF Amplifier

The AF201 is a rare, NOS germanium transistor prized by vintage radio enthusiasts and RF engineers. With its shielded 4-lead TO-72 package and inherently low noise characteristics, it remains an excellent choice for precision RF amplification stages, restoration projects, and experimental VHF/UHF circuits.

Functions & Applications

  • Low Noise Performance: Germanium junction inherently produces minimal noise, ideal for sensitive RF preamplifiers.
  • Shielded 4-Lead Package: The extra shielding lead reduces parasitic coupling and oscillation in high-frequency circuits.
  • Vintage NOS Stock: Original, never-soldered units from classic RF design era, highly sought by restorers.
  • VHF/UHF Optimized: Proven performance in television and radio tuner stages up to UHF frequencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is the AF201 suitable for modern breadboard circuits?
A: Yes, but with care. The TO-72 package fits standard breadboards. However, germanium transistors require reverse bias (hole) at the base and are more temperature-sensitive than silicon; keep the operating point stable.

Q: Why must I solder AF201 quickly?
A: Germanium junctions are highly heat-sensitive. Solder in 2–3 seconds maximum, or use needle-nose tweezers as a heatsink on the leads to protect the junction from thermal damage.

Notes

NOS (Never Out of Stock) vintage germanium transistor. Heat-sensitive during soldering and requires reverse-bias biasing. Store in an anti-static environment.

Note: Price refers to one (1) piece. The component is shipped in bulk without individual packaging.
