The Raspberry Pi Sense HAT is an add-on board that brings a gyroscope, accelerometer, magnetometer, temperature, pressure and humidity sensors, a colour and brightness sensor, an 8x8 RGB LED matrix and a five-way joystick to any Raspberry Pi with a 40-pin GPIO header. It is controlled with the official Python library and comes from the Astro Pi programme on the International Space Station.

Sense HAT Sensor Board with 8x8 LED Matrix Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi Sense HAT is an add-on board (HAT) that plugs onto the 40-pin GPIO header of a Raspberry Pi and turns it into a small sensing and display station. It combines an inertial measurement unit, environmental sensors, a colour and brightness sensor, an 8x8 RGB LED matrix and a five-way joystick on one board, all accessed through an officially supported Python library. The Sense HAT was originally developed for the Astro Pi programme, in which students run their own code on Raspberry Pi computers aboard the International Space Station, and it is widely used in schools, makerspaces and science projects.

Key Features

  • Motion and orientation sensing: gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer (STMicro LSM9DS1)
  • Environmental sensing: temperature, barometric pressure and relative humidity
  • Colour and brightness sensor: TCS3400 RGB and light detector
  • 8x8 RGB LED matrix: shows text, icons, graphs and simple games
  • Five-way joystick: up, down, left, right and middle click
  • Official Python library: one library for the sensors, the LED matrix and the joystick
  • Wide compatibility: any Raspberry Pi with a 40-pin GPIO header

Where It Is Used

  • Weather and indoor environment monitoring stations
  • Motion, tilt and orientation experiments, digital compass and spirit-level projects
  • Games and interactive apps that use the joystick and the LED matrix
  • Astro Pi challenges and other space-science style experiments
  • STEM lessons in physics, geography and programming with Python

Usage Tips

Because the Sense HAT sits right above the Raspberry Pi, heat from the processor can raise the temperature readings. For more accurate temperature measurements, mount the board away from the Raspberry Pi with a GPIO extension cable, or correct the readings in your code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Raspberry Pi models can I use the Sense HAT with?
It works with any Raspberry Pi computer that has a 40-pin GPIO header.

How do I program it?
The Sense HAT has an officially supported Python library that gives access to all the sensors, the LED matrix and the joystick, so you can read data and draw on the display with a few lines of code.

Which sensors does it include?
A gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer (LSM9DS1), a pressure sensor (LPS25HB), a humidity sensor (HTS221), temperature sensors in both of those chips, and a TCS3400 colour and brightness sensor.

Why do temperature readings look higher than the room temperature?
The board sits directly above the Raspberry Pi, which warms up while it runs. Move the Sense HAT away with a GPIO extension cable or apply a correction in software.

What is Astro Pi?
Astro Pi is an educational programme in which students write code for Raspberry Pi computers with Sense HAT boards that run on the International Space Station. This board was originally developed for it.

What can I show on the LED matrix?
The 8x8 RGB matrix can display scrolling text, icons, simple graphs and game graphics, for example a live reading from one of the sensors.
