The 2N697 is a classic NPN medium-power silicon switching transistor in a hermetic TO-39 metal can package. Originally a JAN military-qualified part, it is still used today in general-purpose switching, driver and small-signal amplifier circuits.

2N697 Medium-Power NPN Switching Transistor - Rugged TO-39 Metal Can

The 2N697 is an NPN silicon switching transistor housed in a hermetic TO-39 metal can, originally developed to military JAN specifications and still supplied today by legacy semiconductor manufacturers. Its combination of a 40V VCEO, 60V VCBO and 0.5A collector current rating made it a popular general-purpose part for relay drivers, discrete logic and switching circuits in the 1960s-70s, and it remains a solid choice for repairing vintage equipment or building rugged, temperature-tolerant switching stages today.

Functions & Applications

  • Hermetic TO-39 Metal Package: Superior mechanical ruggedness and thermal stability compared to plastic-encapsulated parts.
  • Wide Voltage Margin: 40V VCEO and 60V VCBO give plenty of headroom for relay and inductive-load switching.
  • Solid Current Gain: hFE typically 40-120, suitable for both switching and small-signal amplification duties.
  • Wide Temperature Range: Rated junction/storage temperature of -65°C to +200°C for demanding environments.
  • Legacy/Military Pedigree: Originally qualified per MIL-PRF-19500, a trusted choice for restoring or repairing vintage equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is there a modern replacement for the 2N697?
A: Yes, parts such as the 2N2219A or 2N3019 (also TO-39 NPN) offer similar or better voltage/current ratings and are more widely produced today.

Q: Can the 2N697 drive a 12V relay coil?
A: Yes, as long as the coil current stays below the 0.5A absolute maximum collector current, and a flyback diode is used across the coil to protect the transistor from inductive spikes.

Notes

Legacy 1960s/70s military-grade (JAN) part in a metal TO-39 can, still produced in small volumes by legacy fabs; mainly of interest for vintage equipment repair or hobbyists who specifically need this part number.

Note: Price refers to one (1) piece. The component is shipped in bulk without individual packaging.
