Potentiometers (or "pots") are among the most interactive components in electronics. Every time you turn up the volume on your stereo or adjust a dimmer switch, you are likely using a potentiometer.


What is it and How does it Work?

A potentiometer is essentially a variable resistor with three terminals. Inside, it consists of a resistive track and a movable contact (wiper) that slides along it.

Its fundamental operating principle is that of a Voltage Divider. As we rotate the shaft, we move the wiper's position, changing the ratio of resistance. The output voltage (Vout) is calculated by:

Vout = Vin × R2 / (R1 + R2)

Where R1 and R2 are the resistances formed on either side of the wiper.


Main Types

Choosing the right potentiometer depends on the application:

  • Linear (Linear Taper - B Type): Resistance changes linearly with rotation. Ideal for precision adjustments and sensors.
  • Logarithmic (Audio Taper - A Type): Resistance changes exponentially. Used exclusively for Audio applications, as the human ear perceives loudness logarithmically.
  • Trimmers (Trimpots): Tiny potentiometers adjusted with a screwdriver, designed to be mounted directly on the PCB for calibration.
  • Slide Potentiometers (Faders): Commonly found on audio mixing consoles.

Practical Applications

They are found everywhere in daily life:

  • Audio volume control (Knobs).
  • Light dimmers.
  • Position sensors (e.g., Joysticks).
  • Voltage adjustment in power supplies.
